What Does NISMO Stand For?

NISMO is a truly legendary name in the realm of Japanese Motorsport.

All Japanese and JDM car enthusiasts can probably remember their first exposure to the Nismo brand.

NISMO is a legendary automotive brand, no doubt about it. 

But what does NISMO stand for?

In the latest instalment of our short series on the names and origins of popular motor sport houses and badges, we will cover what NISMO stands for, as well as a brief history of the brand.

NISMO stands for Nissan (NIS) Motorsport International Limited.

In Japanese, NISMO is (ニッサン・モータースポーツ・インターナショナル株式会社)

NISMO was founded in 1984 by the merger of two Motorsport divisions within Nissan; Oppama Works & Omori Works.

In 1989, NISMO developed the Skyline GT-R for motor racing (which went on to great success worldwide).

NISMO is also known for developing tuning/performance parts and accessories for Nissan cars, and having a key part to play in the development and release of NISMO editions of vehicles, such as the Nissan NISMO GT-R R35:
