The Type R badge was initially reserved for Honda’s incredible Ferrari competitor, the NSX, however, the Japanese manufacturer would soon give some of their lower end models the Type R treatment. Following on from the 1995 Integra Type R, Honda launched the EK9 Civic Type R in 1997 that was based on the JDM 3-door hatchback version of the car.
Like with the NSX and the Integra Type Rs before it, the EK9 Civic Type R went on a serious weight loss program, with anything deemed unnecessary being stripped out. However, for those who still liked their creature comforts, Honda introduced a Type R X model in 1999 that still retained air conditioning, power windows, a CD player, retractable electric door mirrors, and a keyless entry system.
Honda’s team of engineers not only worked their magic on the body of the car, but they also did something special with the B16B engine. The power unit was hand-ported and boasted some serious performance figures with 182 hp (136 kW) at 8,200 rpm and 160 Nm (136 kW) of torque at 7,500 rpm. All this performance was squeezed from 1.6-litres of displacement, making the engine have one of the highest power outputs per litre of all time.
The incredible little engine was matched to a five-speed close-ratio transmission and a helical limited-slip differential.
On the inside, the racing theme continued with red Recaro bucket seats, red Type R floor mats, red door cards, a Momo leather-wrapped steering wheel and a beautiful titanium shift knob.
Unfortunately, while the EK9 Type R Civic proved to be something very special it was only available new in Japan. The car has made its way to many other locations over the years, but just how much did the EK9 Type R cost new in Japan, and what does that translate into today’s money?
In its first year, the EK9 Civic Type R was priced at ¥1,698,000 with higher spec versions costing more. In the last year of production, the price had grown to ¥2,198,000 for the Type R X model. How Much Does a Honda Civic Type R EK9 Cost Today?
As with many nineties Japanese sports cars at the moment, prices of EK9 Civic Type R have gone a bit insane. Not too long ago an immaculate EK9 Type R sold for ¥7,640,000 or around US$70,000. While most EK9s are not going for nearly this much, you will still need to front up tens of thousands of dollars to get one of these cars in good condition. Even something with a couple of hundred thousand kilometres (120,000 miles) will probably set you back at least US$20,000 to $30,000, and possibly much more.
