In doing research for my recent articles about the Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 and Mitsubishi Legnum VR-4, I came across this interesting business.
Project VR-4, based in the town of Palmerston North, New Zealand, is a car and parts dealer that specialises in the Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 and its station wagon sibling, the Legnum VR-4.
In particular, they seem to focus on the VR-4 cars and parts from the eighth generation of Galant (effectively the ‘Mk3’ VR-4) – I’m not sure if they bring in earlier VR-4 models, but I’m going to send a message to ask.
There’s nothing particularly unique these days about car dealerships that import and sell JDM cars (although there is a massive variance in terms of quality of product) but it is a lot less common to find a dealership that effectively specialises in just one model of car.
Project VR-4 imports from Japan and sells restored VR-4s, project cars and even parts/spares cars and individual parts.
They’ve got a great range of VR-4 wagons and sedans at a range of price points depending on age, mileage, specification and condition.
Check out the website here for more information.
So we’re clear, I have no relationship with this company, I’m not on commission to recommend this business or anything like that – I just think it’s great what Project VR-4 is doing, trying to preserve one of the best “everyday” performance cars to come out of Mitsubishi during their golden era of the 1990s and early 2000s.
Obviously this is not the most practical choice of supplier if you live outside of New Zealand, but depending on your budget and the sort of car or part you are looking for it might be worth reaching out. From the wording on the website it seems they are familiar with exporting to Australia, and you might even be able to get an export further afield.
I actually travel to Palmerston North on occasion for work, so next time I head up that way I might see if the team at Project VR-4 would be open to me paying a visit and finding out a bit more about what they do!
