When the Mitsubishi 3000GT (GTO in Japan) launched in 1990 it was one of the most advanced Japanese cars produced to date. It featured incredible technologies that few other cars had and on paper, it looked like one of the best performance vehicles money could buy.
Initially the 3000GT, along with its rebadged cousin the Dodge Stealth, sold incredibly well with sales eclipsing those of the likes of the Mazda RX-7, the Nissan 300ZX and the Toyota Supra. However, in the latter part of the 1990s, sales dropped off dramatically and production was eventually halted in the year 2000 for the Japanese domestic market.
Today the 3000GT/GTO has become somewhat of a classic with prices increasing. With that in mind we thought we would look back at what the 3000GT original cost new. Finding reliable information on the original price in the United States and other markets for the different model years is a bit difficult, so we are going to be looking at the original prices for the Japanese GTO.
Prices for the 1990 Japanese Mitsubishi GTO started at 3,335,000 Yen and went up to 3,985,000 Yen for the top spec Twin Turbo model. Prices fluctuated up and down depending on the model and the year. For full information on how much the GTO/3000GT cost new, check out the section below that also has the prices converted into USD and how much they cost in today’s money.

How Much Does a Mitsubishi 3000GT/GTO Cost in 2020?
Now that you know how much the Mitsubishi 3000GT/GTO cost new, let’s look at how those prices compare to today’s ones.
Prices for the Mitsubishi 3000GT/GTO in 2020 vary wildly depending on a number of factors from what model it is (Twin Turbo/VR4 models are far more sought after), the condition of the car and much more.
Most 3000GT/GTOs tend to sell for around US$10,000 to $30,000. Models in exceptional condition do go for a bit more with some reaching figures of about $50,000 and above. Compared to other Japanese icons like the Toyota Supra Mk4 these prices are fairly low, but they are increasing.

The extra horsepower you get with a ’98 VR4 comes w/ 5 TIMES the problems-and REPAIR COSTS- of a 3000GT SL… Everything from the twin turbos, to the all-wheel drive powertrain, to the MYRIAD technical / electrical upgrades….all ready to break down and malfunction-without even a moment’s notice. With my current 220 HP Caracas red SL, I have all the style, flare, and pizzazz without the bank-breaking repair and maintenance costs. F.Y.I. (and since I have owned five GTs-two of them VR4s, 2 SLs and one base model, I’m speaking from personal experience).
Thanks for commenting Rick – an impressive ownership history you have got there. Interesting to note your comments about reliability too!
I have (2) Mitsubishi’s GT and VR4.
Love these cars, when I get behind the wheel it’s like putting on fine leather gloves. There is a one-ness between you and the car. WOW!
Great cars for sure – thank you so much for taking the time to comment. We would love to see some photos of your cars as well if you are happy to send them in to admin@garagedreams.net
